Is my IP address visible to anyone that i chat w/ via ICQ, that was my main worry as i could see a packet sniffer end up pointing at my network by a would be thief.ītw, i do not use the number in question on wintel boxes whatsoever, only from my *nix machines and Mac's for what its worth. but i hear of these ICQ numbers being jacked all the time, any advice as to how i can protect my UIN from theft online? i know better than to fall for this of course, probably a browser exploit for wintel boxes or a loaded frameset to the icq.com login i suppose. So, my question is, how do you protect an ICQ UIN from theft? how are the accounts typically stolen? ever since going online w/ the UIN in question i've had at least 20 weird msg's pop up a day from people i've never met, most of them trying to get me to visit weird webpages hosted on geocities and similar freehosts. he's now incommunicado on a beach in southeast asia.
he warned me that many would be msg'ing me out of the blue trying to trick me into letting them steal or hack the UIN somehow, but didn't offer much else in the way of information as to how he's held onto it all these years. my friend gave me the the UIN, related password (immediately changed) and the primary email account (password also changed) associated w/ the UIN. while i won't post the UIN number in question here i will say that it is 5-digits and extremely easy to remember, a desirable UIN. I recently had the dubious honor to receive a very good, very old ICQ UIN from a co-worker who is retiring. hope this isn't OT, but it doesn't seem to fit in any other fora better than this one, so here goes.
